What Are Antioxidants?

You’ve probably heard the word antioxidants before, but do you really know what they are?

How to stop aging

Antioxidants are natural or artificial substances that prevent or delay cell deterioration. They are considered beneficial because they protect cells from free radicals, which are unstable molecules that are produced during the oxidation process in living organisms and food.

Oxidation is linked to physiological aging and to the development of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases in the human body. It could also lead to various types of cancer. And since the appearance of free radicals in the human body is inevitable —as they are the result of everyday processes such as digestion or exposure to pollution— antioxidants can be our allies in leading a healthier life. As for foods, antioxidant molecules help prevent them from degrading and extend their shelf life.

Types of antioxidants

Natural antioxidants can be obtained from plants, vegetables, fruits, cereals or meat, and they are also artificially manufactured as supplements to be added to food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical products.

There are many types of antioxidants and the most well-known are the polyphenols, the carotenoids and vitamins C and E. Vitamin E is one the most important nutrients for the proper functioning of the immune, cardiovascular, muscular and reproductive systems of humans and animals.

Vitamin E is composed of eight fat-soluble components known as tocopherols and tocotrienols, which are found mostly in vegetable oils.

AOM: Natural antioxidants

Within our line of antioxidant products, our company Advanced Organic Materials (AOM) produces the natural component tocopherol under the commercial name ADVANTIOX, which is made from soybeans, sunflower and rapeseed oils. Tocopherols are added to different foods for human and animal consumption, as well as to cosmetic products.

We offer this product in two formats: fat-soluble oil and spray-dried powder. It is available in 70% and 50% concentrations, as well as other concentrations that can be tailored to the client’s needs.

According to current market demands for offering natural and organic products, as well as those that are non-GMO or allergen free, we have products that meet these requirements. They are also certified kosher and halal.
